The Truth about Tolerance

June 30, 2015

Think

I’ve been praying and thinking about this the past few days.

I have been called intolerant so many times because I stand for Christ, I stand for His Holy Word. The world hates me (Good!). There’s been a lot of talk about tolerance lately but something struck me as off center or not quite right. I could not put my finger on it, but something was really nagging me about that whole “tolerance” issue.

Then yesterday I just asked the Lord to show me what it was that troubled me about this. His response was swift and it took my breath away.

The act of tolerance (to allow (something that is bad, unpleasant, etc.) to exist, happen, or be done; to accept the feelings, behavior, or beliefs of (someone))

Creates a state of tolerance (to endure or resist the action of (as a drug or food) without serious side effects or discomfort)

It is time to start thinking instead of listening to the world. I stopped buying what those in the world were trying to sell me and they don’t like it, but I stand on the Word of God. The world will tell you that in order to be Christian you must be tolerant – but they don’t tell you the whole story.

Think people!

When you give yourself over to the things of this world, the evil, the godlessness, then you open yourself up to become numb or desensitized to the wicked effects of those things. The lines between what is right, good, and holy and what is carnal, worldly and displeasing to God become blurred. Eventually they simply fade. That way of thinking will keep you bound to the world because it is of the world.

The world wants you to sit by and leave them to their sin as they corrupt others with their wickedness – so they push for tolerance. They try to intimidate and degrade those who are opposed, attempting to discredit them by labeling them as bigots or intolerant.

Some Christians give in just to avoid the attack.

That is not Bible, though. None of it.

Tolerance will not get you anywhere but in the same wicked place as those who are demanding you be tolerant. As Christians we are called to be bold and to stand for the Word, to be a LIGHT in this dark, dark world.

You never know who is watching you, waiting to see how you will handle situations. You never know who you will influence. Your very actions as a Bold Christian could be the very thing that leads them to Him.

When we choose to live for Jesus we become His representatives. It is our job to reflect Him in every single thing that we do. Yes, Jesus loved people. But I also remember a Jesus who turned over some tables in a temple. We have to be willing to turn over some tables, to offend some people, as we stand up for our faith.

This living for God stuff is non-negotiable. Either you are all in, or you are all out. There is no sitting on the fence. God does not compromise and He wants all of us, our hearts and our minds.

So tolerance is not what this world needs.

This world needs Jesus – and some tables turned over.

Thank you for this. I keep hearing how Christians are supposed to be tolerant of all the sinful things going on in our world but this really puts it into perspective.
    Tolerance is dangerous.
    Thank you.

    • Yes it is. So many Christians are blinded by the “Jesus is love” message (and He is love) that they miss the boldness and standing for truth message. As I said, He loved the people but He had no qualms about turning over some tables when He had to.
      God bless!

  2. This is really good. I had never looked at tolerance in this way before.
    Makes a lot of sense.
    Thanks.

    • In truth, I hadn’t looked at it in this way either – until God showed me.
He has a way of opening our eyes and showing us things that make us grow in incredible ways.
      So grateful.
